december beach day | my family
December 29, 2011
i’m admittedly awful about documenting my own family with any regularity. i took 10 pictures on christmas morning. my camera was within arms reach for most of the day and i never felt particularly inspired to pick it up.
sometimes i feel like those special days are cemented in our childhood memories without photographs or video anyway, but days like this lazy afternoon at the beach are what i love to document. logan simply requested to go to the beach with the big hill (near the pier in pismo where the tide pushes the sand up against the retaining wall). it’s week two of our three week winter break, weather is summer-like, and it was the perfect family afternoon. no agenda. just girls exploring and me snapping away at what i found beautiful.

we still have a week and a half until school starts for my girls. logan will be in first grade, avery will be in full-day preschool, and mama is going back to teaching full-time for the first time in 4 years!
the first day of school is always crazy and hectic. i am admittedly not a morning person and have a hard time just getting dressed and out the door in the morning… forget about lunches and hairstyles and you can definitely forget about spectacular pictures. so instead of rushing through it in a few weeks, the girls and i decided to dress up in some cute back-to-school clothes and backpacks and head over to a school for a fun little photo shoot.
can you imagine how excited i was when i realized the lockers coordinated with avery’s outfit???
a little 4-year-old silliness:
because there’s no way she’ll participate in this when she’s really going to junior high…
i loved this idea of standing on a stack of books… so i borrowed it from jules :)
and since i’m going back to school too…
rachel and scott just celebrated ten years of marriage! i know that rachel, like most moms, might have been just a little anxious about getting everyone dressed and excited about a family photo session – but i also knew that my job was to relieve that anxiety by being totally silly with her kids and turn it into what it appears to be in pictures – a fun family evening on the beach. sessions like this always make me appreciate where we live just a little bit more.
ben and his many, awesome looks:
this set is to show you that 1) i’m hillarious and 2) elaina is the next vanna white
beautiful family, up for anything i suggested – we had such fun!
this last one is my favorite of the month! don’t be surprised if i run into you on the beach and ask you to take a similarly blurry picture of my family.
yesterday i had my first vendor booth at the birth and baby fair, in mission plaza downtown slo. i was honestly a little nervous about having to compile display items and then talk about myself all day long, but it turned out to be a really wonderful event! many, many people stopped by and commented on or asked about my tissue paper pom-poms… i learned how to make them from a martha stewart tutorial, available here: http://www.marthastewart.com/how-to/tissue-paper-pom-poms-how-to
and of course, i have to share a few images from the event :)
thanks to everyone who stopped by, and to my special helpers, alyson and symphony! (click their names to see pics of them with their kids – by me of course!) oh, and i still have a few special promo offers available! the next two people to book a session will get their entire $250 session fee applied to prints and products. it’s an awesome deal!
symphony is a friend of mine who happily obliged when i asked her to come out and take pictures at this huge, awesome, yellow field of mustard that i was dying to use for a session. i’d photographed tatianna there last year and knew that the field would be mowed sometime soon. so symphony got her girls dressed up and ready for a session with me and as we turned the corner… yep, my lovely yellow flowers had been demolished.
so we drove around some more, explored and found a few other awesome spots to take pictures.

i met walker (and his adorable twin sister frankie) for a session at rice ranch park. these kids were so joyful and fun and wonderful to run around with for an hour. here’s one favorite – with more to come!

just a quick share from this sweet family with four wild and crazy boys! these boys are always so fun and open to playing around with me (i photographed them last year too… here)
this is one of my favorite images of the year :)
matt, monica & kids
November 20, 2010
slo creek farms quickly became my favorite location of the year for family sessions. the orchard is family run, the owners are ridiculously nice, and there was always a delicious bag of apples coming home with me from my sessions.
monica and i met in parent participation classes just about five years ago when makaio was teeny. then we each had another baby two years later, so there’s been plenty of parenting joys and struggles shared between us. i’m always thrilled to photograph friends… it’s such an honor to be trusted with anyone’s family memories.
monica did an amazing job coordinating, but not matching her family’s outfits. it all started with maile’s adorable sweater and she went from there. i’ve spent plenty of time in old navy, target and gap, agonizing over my family’s clothing choices for a photo session, i know it’s no easy task, but this family is a perfect example of how to look pulled together while still showing individual style and personality.

when jen told me that she wanted to do a cool, downtown session, i thought it was a great idea. when she added that she thought it would be extra fun to have the family take a few pictures at a bar – i thought that was pretty unique and totally awesome.
love these two together!
are you thinking what i’m thinking? they’re ridiculously photogenic.
a quick stop in powell’s for lollipops (that coordinated with the kids clothes, of course) and a few more sweet sibling shots:
3 boys & (finally) a girl! | arroyo grande family photography
November 12, 2010
i met this outgoing family with 3 crazy boys last year just before the twins started kindergarten… just over a year later, everyone has grown about a foot and they now have a long-wished-for baby sister! we went back and forth on the weather this day – it was overcast, then clear, seemed like it would hold out long enough for our session… so we went for it. sure enough, it started raining at the very end.
