december beach day | my family

December 29, 2011

i’m admittedly awful about documenting my own family with any regularity. i took 10 pictures on christmas morning. my camera was within arms reach for most of the day and i never felt particularly inspired to pick it up.

sometimes i feel like those special days are cemented in our childhood memories without photographs or video anyway, but days like this lazy afternoon at the beach are what i love to document. logan simply requested to go to the beach with the big hill (near the pier in pismo where the tide pushes the sand up against the retaining wall). it’s week two of our three week winter break, weather is summer-like, and it was the perfect family afternoon. no agenda. just girls exploring and me snapping away at what i found beautiful.

(taken with kodak 400 BW color negative film. 20-35mm lens.)

10 on 10 | december

December 10, 2011

third installment (that should be the fifth, but oh well!) of my personal project… documenting out beautiful, messy daily life. since we’re back to school full-time, my ‘day’ has been documented in the sweet few hours i have to spend with my family before bedtime each night.  i’m splitting the difference here with 7 moments captured with 12 images… i just couldn’t get 10 images to work out quite right this time :)

  • resting after school
  • the crafty mess
  • christmas everywhere
  • busy while dinner cooks
  • so many missing teeth (& crazy!)
  • bathtime
  • nighty night

as always, i’m doing this project with a group of wonderful photographers. please click through to see jayme franklin’s 10-on-10 project this month.

10 on 10 | october

October 10, 2011

i’ve joined a group of 10 photographers with a monthly project to document real life… as photographers, we often get caught up in the perfect portrait and forget the beauty of every day stuff. while the original format of 10-on-10 is to post 10 images taken over the course of 10 days on the 10th of each month, i haven’t quite managed that goal just yet. first, i’m a master procrastinator, so i continue to put off the day i’m planning to work on this project, until it’s simply too late. as i mentioned in august (yep, i’m such a procrastinator that i missed the september edition) i’m using a film camera for personal/family images, so this set is from a recent day at the beach with my girlies. october is almost always our best beach weather of the year, so this is fitting :)

the little one – in a dress and hat because there’s about 0.000001% chance she’ll go in the water…

the big one – fearless and loves the ocean, in her swimsuit the minute we mention the beach (and check out those ridiculously loose top teeth… they’re just dying to fall out!)

love notes in the sand – big one writes ‘i love you mom’

mr. johnson :)

pretty sure this girl created her own dance circle at the beach:

love this spinning hair:

little one intent on drawing squiggles in the sand:

and continuing the squiggles with her toes (and the fact that the negative is a bit off on the left makes me kind of happy)

big one and i went to explore the tide pools

back to school | arroyo grande child photographer

August 11, 2011

we still have a week and a half until school starts for my girls. logan will be in first grade, avery will be in full-day preschool, and mama is going back to teaching full-time for the first time in 4 years!

the first day of school is always crazy and hectic. i am admittedly not a morning person and have a hard time just getting dressed and out the door in the morning… forget about lunches and hairstyles and you can definitely forget about spectacular pictures. so instead of rushing through it in a few weeks, the girls and i decided to dress up in some cute back-to-school clothes and backpacks and head over to a school for a fun little photo shoot.

can you imagine how excited i was when i realized the lockers coordinated with avery’s outfit???

a little 4-year-old silliness:

because there’s no way she’ll participate in this when she’s really going to junior high…

i loved this idea of standing on a stack of books… so i borrowed it from jules :)

and since i’m going back to school too…

10 on 10 | august

August 10, 2011

i’ve been making a few big steps toward better documenting my own family (aka my girls… we all know that parents get very little love from the camera). i recently purchased a film camera in hopes of finding the art in my personal photos. it’s (surprisingly) incredibly helpful for me to be limited to the exposures on a roll of film. i photograph more thoughtfully without the unlimited shutter clicks of my digital slr.

i’ve also teamed up with an awesome group of women from the bloom forum for a 10 on 10 project. our goal is to post 10 personal images on the 10th of each month. the original challenge was to portray 10 hours of a regular day, but i’ve strayed a bit from that aspect of the challenge this time… these images were all taken within a two-day span and i was just aiming to document more of who and how my girls are at this time. there are 10 of us (surprise!) participating. follow the link at the end of this post for the next 10 on 10 project :)

logan just turned 6. she loves the camera!

avery just turned 4. she likes to do her own thing and i’m lucky to catch a great picture of her smiling.

this one totally reminds me of 40 year old virgin… anyone else???

these bathtime images are a perfect illustration of their different personalities… avery is quiet, reserved, sweet and loving.

and logan can fake-laugh with the best of them, is incredibly social and always looking to show you her latest performance.

more central coast gorgeousness

April 5, 2011

on sunday i met a family for a session out toward lopez lake. the scenery was just ridiculously beautiful, so i took some time for a few landscapes while i was out there.

mustard is short-lived, but i love how it splashes yellow across the hills.

this property is the site of some new houses… the views are unbelievable.

cows. they watched me approach them like a bunch of old ladies on neighborhood watch.

pismo. spring. sunset. awesome

March 14, 2011

tonight i had a sunset session at the beach and stayed a bit longer to shoot just for me… i got a little lost in trying to find details and couldn’t find anything that caught my eye while down on the sand. but as i climbed the steps back up to the sea crest, the pastel tones of the sunset were simply gorgeous.

my girls | february love

February 6, 2011

inspired by a martha stewart craft, my girlies and i picked up some black foam board, new sidewalk chalk and some scissors.  we had a plan for some super cute valentine cards, and a photo session was required.  (once again, i have neglected to take pictures of my own children so much that logan was begging me to get my camera for at least an hour this day.)

dodo is my dad… logan’s favorite person on the planet:

null

avery didn’t like the black chalkboard, it was her idea to make it all pink… so cute! this girl continues to be a challenge for me to photograph. it’s so much easier taking pictures of other people’s kids.

then daddy got home, we flagged him down at the park and he got in on the valentine picture fun:

and a few more that i love from our mini photo shoot:

this last one… i was holding my camera high above my head and in front of me to photograph the girls from above. since i couldn’t see what i was doing, the framing is quite a bit off – i’d probably never do this on purpose but i love it now :)
